HYDROXYCUT & HYDROXYCUT HARDCORE
Do They Work for Weight Loss ?

HYDROXYCUT is a popular product, partly due to the efficacy of the original (Ephedra-containing) formula, and partly due to the massive publicity campaign mounted by its manufacturers through all possible media channels.

Like many weight loss agents, this product has been reformulated after Ephedra was banned from the US market by the FDA. The original Ephedra-containing formula was deemed by many to be quite effective for weight loss, and based on my personal experience I concur with that assessment. However, that formula belongs to the past. We are going to take a look at the new (Ephedra-free) Hydroxycut and evaluate its components and efficacy in weight control.

Here's a list of the main ingredients:

  • Hydroxagen Plus proprietary blend, featuring:
    • Garcinia Cambogia extract - with its active ingredient hydroxycitric acid (HCA), a carb blocker which also has a gentle diuretic effect and possibly appetite suppressant effect
    • Gymnema Sylvestre - a plant extract with glucose lowering effects
  • Caffeine
  • Green Tea and Oolong Tea extract
  • Chromium, which helps maintain stable blood glucose levels
  • Calcium and potassium, which are essential for multiple metabolic processes, including fat-burning processes

Discussion:

  • At present, with Ephedra out of the picture, the fat-burning action of Hydroxycut is accomplished through the Caffeine and Green Tea in its composition. These substances do have thermogenic action, but are no match for the fat-burning power of Ephedra. (The original formulation contained the Ephedrine/Caffeine/Aspirin stack which, safety issues aside, delivered excellent weight loss results.)

  • The proprietary blend Hydroxagen Plus may have certain carb-blocking and glucose lowering effects, but will certainly not lead to dramatic weight loss. In conclusion, the new Hydroxycut formula may be expected to work reasonably well if and only if it's used in combination with a reduced calorie diet and exercise.

Side Effects:

There is no doubt the new Hydroxycut formula is much safer than the previous one. With the deletion of Ephedra from the mix, the major cardiovascular risks posed by the Ephedra/caffeine combination have been eliminated. Still, since the formula contains stimulant substances that accelerate the metabolism (caffeine and green tea extract), side effects such as jitteriness, irritability, anxiety or insomnia may occur. As with any other metabolic stimulant, increased heart rate and blood pressure may develop. Occasionally, diarrhea and upset stomach have been reported.

Dosage:

The recommended dosage of Hydroxycut is 2 capsules 3 times a day, 30 minutes before meals. The doses should be taken at least 4 hours apart from each other. This product should not be taken within 5 hours of bedtime, as this may cause insomnia.

Availability:

Hydroxycut is widely available in stores as well as online. Prices vary dependent on the retailer, with an average price of about $29 for 100 capsules.

.............................................

Lets now turn our attention to Hydroxycut's big brother, HYDROXYCUT HARDCORE.
Judging by its name, this product seems to hold the promise and the key to success. In fact, the name may be justified in this case: The Hardcore formula contains a whopping amount of caffeine (equivalent to 3 cups of coffee) and green tea extract, meant to take care of the fat- burning task. It also contains the Norepidrol blend, a combination of substances used by athletes to increase endurance, attention span and overall performance levels. Additionally, Hydroxycut Hardcore contains the so-called 'Lasidrate delivery blend', a proprietary blend supposed to improve cellular delivery of the other ingredients. Yohimbine, an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist which increases sexual drive and is supposed to stimulate muscle growth, is another interesting component in this mix.

Discussion:

It's readily apparent the Hardcore formula is targeting the fitness-oriented and body-builder segment of the public, rather than the overweight individual merely interested in weight loss. The fact of the matter is, due to its high content of caffeine and green tea, Hydroxycut Hardcore can be expected to deliver tangible weight loss results (especially in combination with serious exercise and a proper diet). However, this product is also quite likely to produce unpleasant side effects linked to the high amount of caffeine. In fact, multiple customer testimonials mention adverse reactions ranging from jitteriness and restlessness to diarrhea and even tachycardia (increased heart rate). Therefore, individuals with cardiovascular disease or cardiovascular risk factors would be well-advised to steer clear of this product.

Dosage:

According to the official Hardcore site (which by the way is pretty lean and mean), the recommended dose is 3 capsules taken with 8 oz of water twice a day, 30 minutes prior to meals. Note is made that ten 8-oz glasses of water should be consumed per day.

Availability:

The official Hydroxycut Hardcore website offers a list of pharmacies and GNC stores carrying this product. Additionally, it is also being offered online by various other retailers, with an average price around $29 for 120 capsules.
